Privacy concerns in the age of social media

NYT 150x150 Privacy concerns in the age of social mediaWith Facebook making changes in privacy practices and the Federal Trade Commission considering adopting a more aggressive approach in policing online business practices, many business owners are taking action to protect the privacy of their customers as well.

In August, the New York Times posted a piece about the growing trend of bars, nightclubs, and other entertainment venues in adopting policies that prohibit tweeting or taking photos of other groups. “In an era … when shots of you in unflattering jeans become part of your permanent Google search results,” writes Allen Salkin, “there are signs that some are tired of living their lives on the Web.”

Far more unsettling than unflattering jeans are the findings from a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which discovered that medical students were in violation of doctor-patient confidentiality by tweeting or blogging about patient details.

Of 78 US medical schools studied, over half reported incidents of medical students posting sensitive or unprofessional material online. In some cases, even when patient names were not used, enough information was provided that patients could potentially be identified. One in ten postings was found to be in blatant violation of patient confidentiality. Profanity, discriminatory language, and sexually suggestive material were common.

Few of the schools had policies that dealt with social networking and blogging. Investigators involved in the study are recommending that professional use of social media become part of media school curricula.

EXTRA: KnowYourMeme.com

While surfing online today, I made the best discovery and thought I would share it with you all. It’s KnowYourMeme.com, from RocketBoom, and it features examples and the history of internet memes, from Three Wolf Moon to Dramatic Prairie Dog. It was featured as one of the 50 Best Websites of 2009 by Time Magazine. Most memes are spread using social media and popular websites like 4Chan, so I thought it seemed only appropriate to share since it highlights the power of social media and how almost anything and go viral in a very short period of time.

In addition to the actual website, Rocketboom also does a great series of funny, yet informative, videos about the most popular internet memes. One of my favorites, Keyboard Cat, is featured below:

In addition, here’s one of my favorite Keyboard Cat videos:

I hope you all enjoy KnowYourMeme.com as much as I did!

Kanye West Creates a New Internet Meme

Kanye West’s interruption of music sweetheart Taylor Swift at the VMAs Sunday night has created a lot more trouble for the outspoken star than he ever would have thought.

The phrase “I’mma let you finish” has becoming the latest internet meme, joining the ranks of Three Wolf Moon T-Shirt on Amazon.com, Rick Roll’d, and Keyboard Cat.

Internet geeks (such as myself) have been rapidly building websites, icons, and more to keep up with the demand that making fun of Kanye West has seemed to bring. Here’s a few things I noticed during my time spent on the internet in the past few days:

Immaletyoufinish.com — readers submit their own graphics of Kanye interrupting people all over the web, TV, and beyond.

Twibbon allows you to to overlay your Twitter profile picture with a picture of Kanye saying “Ima let U finish”

And, my personal favorite- http://kanyelicio.us lets Kanye interrupt websites! Here’s Kanye interrupting The Social Robot.

Have you found anything else? Feel free to post it in the comments!
