Brian Solis' book, Engage, is a great book to help demonstrate the importance of building community and awareness through involvement in social media. Recommend reading it.I've also been trying out PostRank recently which provides daily feedback of your page views and how you're doing with engagement points. It's very helpful to see which content gets comments, tweets, etc. Thanks again,

Perhaps we should be looking at student comments as a marker of engagement---and the way we respond as a source of the problem.Go, DonorsChoose!

As a teacher, this was, for me, an interesting and novel use of the word “engagement.” We are always seeking to encourage our students to be engaged in the work of the classroom. Some of what you say I was aware as a matter of just beginning to blog and sensing the give and take aspect of a virtual community. The comments I get on my cartoons are sometimes useful, too, because I can see how people read my work differently. Thanks for this.

This was very helpful. Some social spheres have tacit rules, that one picks up as one goes, and some have clear requirements for behavior that one must not break. I'm starting to feel this new social sphere lies somewhere between pick-up softball game and the Catholic Church.

Being new to the content-creation side of the bloggyworld, I feel like I’m back in kindergarten, learning how to behave, make friends and gain the teacher’s favor. What I'll add is that some commenters are looking to increase their PageRank by getting a link from a popular blog that has related content (for relevance). So, they get the benefit of immediate traffic and the potential to raise the Google value of a page on their website. Nice work! BTW, I did an <a href="http://aidantaylor.com/internet_marketing_blog/comment-marketing-introduction" rel="nofollow">introductory video I did on "Comment Marketing"</a> - some may find it useful.

I agree with your encouragement of a quid pro quo blogosphere. I'm just beginning the process of blogging for a children's book I'm writing. I've been trying to understand how to better promote my blog and this article has given me some great ideas of how to do that.
