By Kelsey Jones

fb recommendation thumb New Facebook Feature: Recommending PlacesIn an attempt to catch onto the online review craze (that includes bigwig websites like Yelp.com and UrbanSpoon) Facebook’s latest feature for Pages is the ability for users to recommend a page to others. The Importance of Targeting on Facebook Ads

By Kelsey Jones

A few days ago, this ad showed up on the advertising sidebar of my Facebook:

beard thumb The Importance of Targeting on Facebook Ads

This is hilarious to me because I’m married, which I also mention in my Facebook profile. When Facebook advertisers set up their campaigns, they can target their ads to certain profile demographics on Facebook, based on the information in each user’s profile. Areas include location, age, gender, education, etc.

It also includes dating status, which beardedmate.com should have focused on when setting up their campaign.

How to Find a Job Using Social Media

by Bethaney Wallace

In this new day and age, technology is the focal point of many things we do. Computers are consulted daily in a number of ways: email, checking or comparing product reviews, and of course, social media. So with all of the ways technology and the Internet affect our lives, why not expand it to the areas you’re not using it for: searching for your new job. That’s right, the social media accounts you already have and use daily can help get you a job.

soc media11 300x200 How to Find a Job Using Social MediaThere are obvious sites that are helpful in a job search, LinkedIn, job opening banks, Yahoo’s job board, but what about the sites you already use? By utilizing the availability and marketability of social media, you can help get the word out about your skills. First of all, this should go without saying, but, make sure you’re profiles are appropriate. This doesn’t mean you can’t crack jokes or even show your personality, but leave the pictures of keg stands or “When was the last time you had sex” questionnaires out. Unless you’re applying to be a tell-all blogger or reality star, your potential boss won’t be impressed.

Have You Been Using Chrome For a Cause?

ChromeforCause 270x235 Have You Been Using Chrome For a Cause? If you use Chrome regularly, you should have downloaded the Chrome For a Cause browsing extension, available from December 15-19.  This extension counts how many tabs you use and then based on that number, you can choose to donate your “tabs” to several different charities, including The Nature Conservancy and Room to Read.

The number of tabs translates into vaccines, water, books, shelter, or trees. Whenever you start your browser for the day, it tells you how many tabs you accumulated the day before and then lets you choose who to donate them to. I never realized how many tabs I used in my browsers until I started donating them!

A friend did tell me that the tabs max out at 250 per day. Ten tabs equals 1 book or 1 tree planted, according to Google. You still have today and tomorrow left to donate, so download the extension as soon as possible.

5 Inspirational Print Magazines

Much has been written about the death, or at least the increasing decrepitude, of traditional media. Print media are among those taking the hardest hits, with newspapers and magazines seeing drops in circulation and advertising, and few of them able to take profitable advantage of online opportunities. While all this is true, there are success stories that deserve recognition, particularly among magazines, some of which are not just surviving. Here are five print magazines with trend-setting influence that occupy the leading edge of style and content.
