B-Sides: The Dilemma of Your Family on Facebook

by Bethaney Wallace

In 2006, Mark Zuckerburg proved why he’s a billionaire by tapping into the “adult” market. Where previously only college and high school students could join Facebook, in September of 2006 Facebook became every teenager’s nightmare by becoming available to anyone 13 years or older, the only stipulation being a valid email.

An online outlet where parents can stalk their children while simultaneously embarrassing them? If anything is surprising, it’s that this market didn’t exist before.

How to Add Plugin-Free Twitter, Sphinn, and Facebook Buttons to Your WordPress Blog

After coming across Jaspal’s brilliant blog post, How To Add Digg, Stumble, Twitter Share Buttons On Your WordPress Blog, I tried to add the buttons using the method he explained to The Social Robot. However, I decided that I didn’t really know how to host the javascript images that Jaspal suggests and I wanted to have Twitter, Sphinn, and Facebook buttons instead of Digg and StumbleUpon because my blog is mostly about social media and search engine marketing.

So, after several tries, I modified the code using javascript that is already hosted as sites like TweetMeme and Sphinn. That way you can just pop in the code and you’re ready to go!

How to get your social media profiles crawled by search bots

Social media profiles like those found on Twitter and Facebook are crawled by search engines and are indexed. In addition, user contributions on social media sites- notes that are posted, statuses, tweets, are also indexed, sometimes at an alarming rate.

Be sure to use clear, plain language cut to the chase. No one wants to read a tweet about what the intern is wearing or the color of the new carpet being laid in the office.

Time to Kill Your Virtual Identity? Seppukoo Can Help

Seppukoo Time to Kill Your Virtual Identity? Seppukoo Can Help

UPDATE: As of Jan 2010, Facebook has blocked Seppukoo’s API access to their website.

If Facebook has taken over your life but you can’t find a way out, an “imaginary art group” has created a new web site that can help. Seppukoo.com allows you to deactivate your Facebook account with a virtual ritual suicide befitting of a samurai warrior.

Named after seppuku, an ancient Japanese samurai ritual in which samurai would plunge a sword into their own stomachs to escape defeat by their enemies, the web site invites users to “impress your friends, disconnect yourself” and “discover what’s after your Facebook life.” By entering your Facebook user ID and password (the site says no data will be stored on its server), you can customize a memorial page that will be sent to all your Facebook friends, who will have the opportunity to leave a farewell message.

If you later decide that life is just not complete without Facebook, you can log into the site to reactivate your account.

The creators of the site, Les Liens Invisibles (which translates to “The Invisible Links”) claims the site was not started to attack Facebook, but simply to help people “rediscover the importance of being anyone, instead of pretending to be someone.” Les Liens Invisibles even has its own Facebook page.
